What is Redirect?

Definition and meaning of Redirect:

URL redirect, also called URL forwarding is when a URL sends you to another one. You use redirects to send visitors to a different URL than the one they requested.

For example, if you go to apple.ca, it sends you to apple.com/ca.

It’s useful when content has been moved or the page has been deleted. Redirects are a great marketing and SEO tool, they can:

  • prevent 404 errors
  • pass your page/website rank
  • allow people to use short links rather than complicated ones (URL Shorteners)

Types of common redirects:

301 redirect or permanent redirect – used when a website has permanently moved to a new URL.

302 redirect or temporary redirect – used when a URL is changed for a ceratin period of time.
